Ezbet El-Nakhl is a district in the northern region of Greater Cairo, east of the Nile, in Egypt. The district is separated by the metro station (Ezbet El-Nakhl station) into two regions, Eastern Ezbet El-Nakhl & Western Ezbet El-Nakhl. The Name They named it Ezbet El-Nakhl as the district was a farmland full of palm trees "Nakhl". Now it's totally a residential area with a very few palm trees. Location & History Ezbet El-Nakhl is in between Ain Shams & El-Marg district. The district has one of the old & historical Coptic Churches which is St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Cathedral. About Ezbet El- Nakhl - is partly a slum. One part belongs to the Cairo Governorate and the other governorate Kaliubya . Being divided in two governorates become unstable means for education , health and the environment. Ezbet El- Nakhl - is a real slum area with 730,000 inhabitants . Most of its inhabitants are immigrants from Upper Egypt. The birth rate in the sector was 2.6% . The city also receives about 50,000 immigrants per year ( DHS 2000 Egypt, El Zananty and associates) . 15% of residents are children under 5 years. Ragpickers Ezbet el Nakhl are nearly 10 000. " zabbaleen " manage to recycle 90% of what they collect. Not by concern for the environment , but only to survive, their techniques are impressive. The population of Ezbet El- Nakhl - do not have adequate teachers institutions. Government schools are few address the growing number of children in the neighborhood . There are only three government elementary schools in the district . The average capacity of a classroom of 60 children. Education has been provided by the government school , except for the very poor. The result is a gap between education and the reality of the labor market. Not the whole place is a slum, only some specific spaces. Actually the structure of the place is good and streets are wide. Also they established new bridge which is connecting the ring road with Mustorod. The Mahaba Association reated in August 2007, the Mahaba association was born in Cairo of desire and the will of Dr Adel and sister Maria . Officiating in the slum of Ezbet El- Nakhl - volunteers continue the work of Sister (Emmanuelle ) . In connection with the Salam Centre , located in this district, Mahaba association aims to provide material and educational support to scavengers and their children. Centre Salam In 1980, Mrs Sadat, wife of the President, inaugurated the Salam Centre. This is a multipurpose center with a clinic where twenty volunteer doctors provide care, maternity, a nursery, a center for the disabled, professional workshops and social club. Then, a small school "Mahaba school" to the same edge of the garbage area. When leaving, Sister Emmanuelle has entrusted the management of the Centre to the Egyptian Orthodox congregation "Girls of Mary", pursuing actions. The Centre has developed new actions towards including disabled who now have a specialized school and a boarding school. A team is trying to issue identity cards to those who request it, and a pediatric clinic was established with an educational mission to the moms. A hospital is currently operational, with a training center in order to employ people from the neighborhood and give them new opportunities.
